Fashion Inspiration: Jessa Johansson

Monday, September 17, 2012
I am going through major "Girls" withdrawal. The HBO series instantly became one of my favorite shows after watching the first episode. While the second season doesn't kick off until January, I thought I could tide over my craving by focusing a post on one of my favorite characters, Jessa.

In case you haven't watched the show, it chronicles the lives of four women in New York City, dealing with their careers, relationships and friendships. Sound familiar to my all-time favorite show "Sex and the City"? Creator, writer, director and star Lena Dunham shared there is an undeniable connection between the two: "This show couldn't exist without 'Sex and the City,' both for what it opened up for women on television and because these characters were raised on 'Sex and the City.'" The difference? "Girls" is less polished, less glamourous and, well, less sexy. Lena told Reuters, "What is similar is the constant struggle to define yourself, it is set in this urban jungle — if we want to call it that — and the strong relationships between women."

While I love all of the ladies from the show, I am especially fond of free-spirited, fearless and effortlessly cool Jessa Johansson, played by Jemima Kirke. Her adventurous streak carries over to her wardrobe, which is undoubtedly the most eccentric of the girls. It is one part vintage, one part bohemian and, usually, unapologetically odd. But it is the boldness in her outfits that I find most intriguing.

Costume designer Jenn Rogien shared the inspiration behind Jessa's styling: a little bit of the character, a little bit of the daring, NYC girl and a little bit of Jemima herself. I'm not certain many of us can pull off her "Sexy Geisha" look or feathered get-up from the Bushwick party, but there are cues we can take for Jessa-influenced looks. Take a look at a few of my interpretations below!
