"It" Boy Bands for Every "It" Girl

Tuesday, September 25, 2012
My obsession with boy bands originated when I was 12 years old. Hanson "MMMBop"ed their way into the charts and, simultaneously, into my heart. My very first concert was their "Middle of Nowhere" tour and, although it rained and I was on the muddy lawn, I was in heaven.

Then, it was *NSYNC, and I was all about *NSYNC. To this day, I still have debates about why *NSYNC is better than the Backstreet Boys. But even as much as I adored *NSYNC, I also had 98 Degrees, LFO, O-Town and even a little bit of BSB on heavy rotation on my discman.

Fast forward more than a decade later, and some of the top songs played on my iTunes are from quartets or  quintets of young men. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're aware boy bands are everything right now. Even The New York Times ran a feature about their popularity earlier this year. In response to the resurgence, some people may ask: "WHY?" I will give you two reasons

1) Boy bands are fun.
2) Boy bands are cute.

I didn't promise profound reasons.

Whether you genuinely enjoy their music, consider them a guilty pleasure or just have the hots for a member or two, there is a special place in an "It" Girl's heart for boy bands. Thus, I am going to break down three of my personal favorites.

One Direction

Foundation: British-Irish. Harry Styles (18), Niall Horan (19), Zayn Malik *swoon* (19), Liam Payne (19) and Louis Tomlinson (20).
Claim to fame: Placed third on The X Factor UK, signed with Columbia Records and became the first British group to top the Billboard 200 chart with its debut album.
You probably know: "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing."
You should also check out: "Everything About You," "Stole My Heart" and the first single from their forthcoming album, "Live While We're Young."
Perfect for the "It" Girl who... has a closet filled with  alice + olivia dresses and makes sure her days off include Pinkberry and a little pampering.

The Wanted
via The Mirror

Foundation: British-Irish. Nathan Sykes (19), Jay McGuiness (22), Siva Kaneswaran (23), Max George, marry me (24) and Tom Parker (24).
Claim to fame: The boys began to see success in the UK with their debut album in 2010, but they really cracked the U.S. with their single "Glad You Came," selling three million copies.
You probably know: You've hopefully danced to "Glad You Came" and "Chasing The Sun" at the bars more than once.
You should also check out: "Lightning," "Last To Know," "Weekend" and "Gold Forever."
Perfect for the "It" Girl who... loves leather, parties in Alexander Wang and isn't afraid to get into a little trouble.

Big Time Rush

Foundation: American. Kendall Schmidt (21), James Maslow, my boo (22), Carlos Pena Jr. (23) and Logan Henderson (23).
Claim to fame: The boys are a product of Nickelodeon, who signed them to a record contract and television series in 2009. (Note: The show is hilarious. Seriously.) Their single "Boyfriend" became their breakout hit, peaking at number 30 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart. There was even a remix of the track with Snoop Dogg.
You probably know: "Boyfriend" and maaaybe "Music Sounds Better With U."
You should also check out: "Worldwide," "All Over Again" and "Superstar."
Perfect for the "It" Girl who... is loaded up on Marc Jacobs accessories, lusts after the latest embellished Markus Lupfer sweater and is the first to crack a joke among her friends.
