A Song of Ice and Shae: Sibel Kekilli Talks Peter Dinklage and More

Sunday, May 5, 2013
Sundays used to feel like doomsday, signaling the wrap of the weekend and the incoming dread of Monday morning. Thanks to my bestie, I now look at Sundays as Game of Thrones Day. And it's awesome.

Although I started a little late, I've been obsessed with Game of Thrones as soon as I watched the first episode of season one. Our apartment now includes six Pop! figurines, refrigerator magnets, shot glasses and GoT-inspired t-shirts. We're both very big Lannister fans — after all, they have power, wealth, wit, the coolest sigil and some of the best characters in the series.

Anyone who is a Game of Thrones fan, regardless of their feelings toward House Lannister, seems to love Tyrion. How could you not? He has some of the best one-liners, and is perhaps one of the most intelligent characters on the show. Thus, when presented the opportunity to have a quick chat with his mistress, Shae, I nearly dropped my goblet filled with Cersei's never-ending wine.

German actress Sibel Kekilli — aka Shae — was born and raised in Heilbronn, Germany. She currently resides in Hamburg, where she devotes much of her time to Terre des Femmes, an organization that raises solidarity and awareness about violence against women, specifically in families of Islamic background.

Check out my interview below, where I get her perspective on who should be sitting on the Iron Throne, and learned more about her personal style.

What is your favorite part of playing Shae?
She is always true and honest to herself and others. And, of course, most of her scenes are with Peter Dinklage.

And the most challenging part?
To get the most out of an important, but still small, supporting role. And as I am not an English native speaker, it is sometimes a bit hard to follow all the different accents on the set.

How funny is Peter Dinklage? :)
He is one of the funniest persons I have ever met. After getting better with my English, he said that I now understand his jokes and he could not make fun of me when I was with him.

I think I already know the answer here, but who do you think really deserves to sit in the Iron Throne?
Shae and Tyrion! ;)

What is it like to be a part of a show that has become such a phenomenon? Any funny fan stories?
It's just incredible. I think I start to realize now how big it really is. Someone called me Shae in Istanbul and fans in Los Angeles wanted me to sign autographs at the airport; I initially looked behind myself because I thought they were waiting for someone else.

Let's talk fashion. What comprises your closet when you aren't filming?
Hard question. A bit of everything. Mainly colorful, casual and comfortable clothes. To be honest, I have a stylist who does her job perfectly.

What color are your nails right now?
 Soft rose, recently manicured.

Who are your favorite "It" Girls in Hollywood?
Maybe Mara Rooney or Chloë Sevigny.

Define what an "It" Girl is to you.
Someone who has a very unique style and personality. Someone who couldn't care less what other people think about her.

What's next for you?
A trip to Istanbul and the shooting of Tatort, a crime series in Germany.
